Toyota and Lexus are regularly in the top three when it comes to reliability. For 2025, not much has changed. According to J.D.Power, Lexus continues to be at the top of the list while Toyota has gone down to fourth position after Mazda (third place) and Buick (second place).
But despite consistently ranking at the top (or near), Toyota and Lexus are not without issues. According to Car Recalls, the Japanese carmaker issued a service recall for seven models, some of which belong to the Japanese luxury brand. All of the below-listed models are produced between 2022 and 2025. Most of them are sold on the North American market and may suffer from a very peculiar issue.
Affected models
- 2022-2025 Toyota Corolla/ Corolla Cross
- 2022-2025 Toyota RAV4
- 2022-2025 Toyota Yaris/ Yaris Cross
- 2022-2025 Toyota Highlander
- 2022-2025 Toyota C-HR
- 2024-2025 Lexus LBX
- 2024-2025 Lexus LM350h
The issue

The above-mentioned Toyota and Lexus models may suffer from deteriorating memory. The issue is described as a bug in the software of a combined measuring device that can cause its memory to deteriorate. Think of it as “car dementia”.
A car’s memory device, in some cases, prevents a car from resetting to its default settings after you remove the battery. This goes beyond just memorizing the driver seat adjustments, radio stations, etc. Cars can adapt to a specific driving style (to a varying degree). While a memory deterioration issue doesn’t make the car undrivable, it may be possible to notice (very slight) differences. Ultimately, this does not affect a car’s drivability in any drastic manner.
Four of the seven models are sold in the US. These include the most popular compact SUV – Toyota RAV4 and the Toyota Corolla, which also includes the Corolla Cross. Toyota Highlander is also on the list, and this likely includes the Grand Highlander (despite not being mentioned). If you have one, it might be worth checking.
Lexus LBX is also among the affected models. The compact crossover was trademarked for the US where it will replace the struggling Lexus UX. Amon the models that may experience “memory loss” is the second-generation Toyota C-HR, which was not sold in the US. However, the third-generation C-HR is coming back to the American market as an all-electric, performance crossover.
This isn’t the first we hear of Toyota cars having problems with the memory service. Another recall mentions that the 12.3-inch driver instrument cluster can go blank, causing the driver to lose the speedometer and all warning lights. Affected models include Toyota Camry, Toyota Corolla, and Toyota RAV4, manufactured between 2023 and 2025.
If you own one of the above-mentioned models or think your Toyota may be affected by the issue, you can check your VIN in Toyota’s recall website. If you have already experienced the issue, I would be curious to read about it in the comment section below, so we can have a better understanding of how it manifests itself.
