Testing My 2025 Tesla Model Y Juniper's Camp Mode Revealed Surprisingly Low CO2 Levels Even With Two Kids Sleeping Inside

In the crowded landscape of automotive chatter, most conversations orbit around horsepower, range, or software updates. But every so often, a story emerges from the wilds of ownership that shifts the focus to something more fundamental: the air we breathe.
That’s exactly what happened when a new Tesla Model Y Juniper owner turned his curiosity into an overnight science experiment, using Camp Mode as the stage and a CO₂ monitor as the truth-teller.
Instead of a tale about road trips or charging stops, this one unfolded in still air, under a glass roof, with two kids sleeping soundly in the back.
He went to Reddit to talk about it.
“I was curious to try how well my new Model Y Juniper maintains temperature on Camp Mode and what CO2 levels (inside) are. I used my trusty Aranet for that and was pleasantly surprised to learn that CO2 levels were low with two kids sleeping inside.
Close to a natural environment. Meaning Tesla allows fresh air in, or at least did this night, but results may vary if the outside temperature was different.
But temperature readings are weird. I had it 71°F  for the whole night, and it rose sharply in the early morning. Sunrise was at 5:30 AM. Camp Mode was on since around 21:00 (9 PM) till around 7:00 AM. Outside, the lowest temperature was 53°F. Just thought I’d share”

The readings he shared painted a clear, almost textbook example of effective air management. For most of the night, CO₂ levels hovered between 600 and 700 ppm, numbers usually associated with well-ventilated rooms or being outdoors away from city congestion. Even the lowest point from the previous day, 447 ppm, was close to ambient atmospheric conditions. And while the week’s high of 1672 ppm stood as a reminder of what happens without airflow, the overnight camping test stayed far from that territory.
The Tesla Model Y Juniper Facelift

  • The 2025 Model Y refresh, internally dubbed Juniper, brings a fully redesigned front and rear with a full-width LED light‑bar motif and reintroduced physical turn‑signal stalks for U.S. users
  • The U.S. “Launch Series” Edition started deliveries in March 2025, priced at about $59,990, including Tesla’s Full Self‑Driving (Supervised) package
  • New Long‑Range AWD trim, introduced at $48,990 (before the $7,500 federal EV tax credit), offering nearly identical performance (327 miles EPA range, 0‑60 mph in ~4.6 s) but without FSD included
  • The Long Range AWD variant sees a modest EPA‑range jump, from ~311 to 320 miles (+3 %), thanks to improved aerodynamics and powertrain efficiency (+~10 % real‑world efficiency)

Temperature tracking revealed another wrinkle. Set to 71°F for the entire night, the cabin held steady until just after sunrise, when readings began climbing to around 74°F before easing back. Outside air dipped to 53°F in the small hours, so the likely culprit for that early spike was solar gain through the panoramic glass. The Model Y Juniper’s climate system could hold against the chill, but direct morning sunlight seemed to tip the balance for a short while.

Seasoned Tesla owners in the thread confirmed that CO₂ can spike quickly in a sealed car without ventilation, especially if the system defaults to recirculation mode. That didn’t seem to happen here.
How Tesla’s Algorithm Works
Whether Tesla’s algorithms were pulling in fresh air at intervals or adjusting fan cycles based on sensor input, the result was a steady, breathable atmosphere that didn’t require cracking a window. A few readers noted that hotter, more humid conditions might yield higher readings, but still not enough to breach comfort thresholds.
Camp Mode’s role in this is worth underscoring. Designed to keep HVAC, lighting, and electronics running while parked, it has become a favorite for car campers, pet owners, and even people using their cars as temporary workspaces. What this test demonstrates is that its benefits go beyond temperature stability. It appears Tesla has engineered in enough fresh-air exchange to keep occupants alert and comfortable through long, stationary stretches.
The Tesla Model Y Juniper Launch Series Specifications

  • The Launch Series AWD hits 0‑60 mph in 4.1 seconds, with a top speed around 125 mph, consistent with prior specs despite the facelift
  • The Juniper interior adds ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, an 8‑inch rear touchscreen, an updated center console, and improved suspension for a quieter, smoother ride experience
  • Volume production of Juniper began in late Q1 2025 at Gigafactory Texas, signaling broad availability in the U.S. following an initial China launch
  • Juniper Model Y measures 188.6 in long, 78 in wide, and 63.9 in tall, slightly larger than its predecessor, helping improve interior space and aerodynamics

One commenter recalled bringing their own CO₂ monitor on a week-long trip, noting that the Model Y outperformed every previous car they’d slept in when it came to overnight freshness.

Another observed that, compared to traditional vehicles that would require idling to achieve similar comfort, the electric setup eliminated both noise and tailpipe emissions.
The Model Y Juniper held its temperature, kept its air clean, and let a family sleep through the night without a hint of stuffiness. It’s the kind of quiet capability that won’t show up on a spec sheet.
