When traveling, some maintenance issues pop up unexpectedly and require immediate attention. Unfortunately for Tesla owners, almost everything Tesla repair and maintenance-related cannot be taken care of immediately due to long waiting times for an appointment and/or actual servicing.

One example is windshield wiper blade failure.
Wiper Blade Replacement Is a Do-It-Now Maintenance Task
I’ve seen this in many vehicles―owners who do not maintain their wiper blades and often delay replacing them when the rubber is cracked or broken.
The problems that can follow a faulty wiper blade for Tesla or other EV owners include:

  1. Reduced Visibility: Cracked or broken rubber won’t make full contact with the windshield, leaving streaks, smears, or even patches of water untouched, especially during rain—this directly compromises visibility and driving safety.
  2. Potential Windshield Damage: If the rubber wears away completely, the wiper arm’s metal or hard plastic parts can scratch or gouge your windshield.
  3. Sensor Interference: Tesla models rely on clear windshields for Autopilot and other camera-based safety features. Poor wiper performance can interfere with sensors, reduce system accuracy, or cause warnings.
  4. Tesla-Specific Maintenance: Tesla wipers are more expensive and often uniquely sized depending on the model, so replacing them before they fail ensures you’re not stuck during bad weather. If you do wait, you may be too far from a Service Center and/or will have a long waiting period for an appointment.

Even Tesla’s Offer Some Affordable DIY Opportunities
One of the perks of owning a Tesla or other EV is that there are fewer moving parts and less maintenance is required. The con to this, however, is that EV owners fall for the hype that all maintenance and repair require a specially trained tech.

This is not so. At least for some things.
That was the message behind a recent 4X2WagonFamily YouTube channel episode where the host demonstrates how easy it is to DIY the wiper blades on a Model X and at a parts cost of about 50% less with Tesla aftermarket wiper blades.
