Shane Misner, a brand-new Cybertruck owner from Kansas, says his truck experienced a critical failure during his first drive from the Tesla showroom.
Shane reports that after taking delivery of his Cybertruck, he drove straight to a Tesla supercharger.
He was looking to take advantage of the one-year unlimited supercharger access included with his new Cybertruck.
Shane says the first 70-mile drive to the Tesla supercharger station was smooth.
However, when he plugged in and started to charge, the Cybertruck experienced a critical failure.
Shane states that the left rear motor of his tri-motor Cybertruck failed during the charging session.
With a dead motor, Shane’s Cybertruck shut down completely, prompting him to call a tow truck to transport the vehicle back to the showroom.
A vehicle that fails before you even get to drive it home isn’t ideal; however, making matters worse, since the Cybertruck requires major repairs, Shane is now worried his brand-new truck might be stuck at the service center for a while.
The frustrated Cybertruck owner shared his story on the Cybertruck Owners Only group on Facebook.
He writes…
“Well, I took delivery of my 2025 Cybertruck yesterday afternoon, drove it 70 miles from the showroom to a supercharger to make sure my one year of free charging worked, and then BLAM, the rear left motor catastrophically failed.
QUESTION: Now that I flathauled it to the service center, how long (from y’all’s experience) does it take to install a new motor?
I’m eager to get back in my Cybertruck!”
Below his post, Shane included a video of his Cybertruck’s center touch screen. The screen can be seen flashing red and displays in bold, “Pull Over, Vehicle Shutting Down.”
In addition to the video, Shane also posted a picture of his Cybertruck loaded onto a tow truck at a Tesla supercharger station.
This is definitely not ideal; however, looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners came to Tesla’s defense, saying that one vehicle dying on the first drive doesn’t mean all Cybertrucks have reliability issues.

A fellow Cybertruck owner, Andrew Bartlett, writes…
“12,000 miles on my Cybertruck and zero problems. Love driving this thing. Was on vacation for 3 weeks and wanted to come home just cause I missed it!”
A second Cybertruck owner, Satesh Raju, writes…
“No, a Cybertruck failure is rare. I have had zero issues. 8,000 miles in 3 months and loving it every second.”
A third Cybertruck owner, Steve Dallas, says that only early Cybertruck models have reliability issues.
Steve writes…
“No. Some early Cybertrucks, specifically the tri-motor versions and only the early models, have an issue with their inverter, which is likely what failed here. The problem has since been fixed, and this will be addressed.”
Given all the Cybertruck failures we have seen so far, it’s surprising to see so many Cybertruck owners defending the vehicle.
And even more surprisingly, Shane, the Cybertruck owner whose truck died during his first supercharger session, has come out in defense of Tesla.
Shane says it’s a good thing that the truck failed because it will give Tesla the chance to fix everything early.
He writes…
“For the 70 miles I drove my Cybertruck, she drove like a dream. Better to get the bugs worked out early in its life, right?”
