Subaru Just Gave the Outback a $5000 Price Hike to Go with Its New Look

  • Subaru just announced pricing for the 2026 Outback lineup, which revealed a $5030 increase in the starting price for the model—mainly because the previous base model is no more.
  • The 2026 Outback lineup now starts at $36,445 for the entry Premium trim, and ranges up to $49,445 for the range-topping Touring XT.
  • The 2026 lineup will start reaching dealerships later this year.

Subaru’s introduction of the seventh-generation Outback earlier this year was already contentious enough—is it even a wagon anymore?—but the automaker has just revealed the 2026 lineup’s pricing structure, and things are about to get even more heated. That’s because, along with completely redesigning the iconic nameplate, the 2026 Outback will be $5030 more expensive to start than the 2025 model.View Exterior PhotosSubaruPart of the reason can be focused on Subaru dropping the generic “Outback” trim that formerly served as the model’s entry point. Starting from the 2026 model year, customers will have to fork over a minimum of $36,445 to get into the Premium trim, which now serves as the base model. There’s a fairly significant step up from the Premium to the Limited, with the latter ringing up at $43,165. Upgrading to the Limited XT’s more potent 2.4-liter engine brings that price up to $45,815. The Wilderness is next in line at $46,445, followed by the Touring at $46,845, and the Touring XT at $49,445. Subaru is hardly the first automaker to drop a base model from its lineup, and it certainly won’t be the last. But when an automaker pairs pulling the rug out with an influx of new technology—like what’s happening as Subaru ushers the Outback into its seventh generation—the result can be like a bucket of cold water to the face. And, in the Outback’s case, it means a 16 percent year-over-year increase. More on the Outback
