If we may speak to the people buying rooftop tents for a moment: You know you’ve got a house at home, right? Well, we can’t give you too much grief. Few accessories look as badass fixed to the roof of a shiny new Toyota Land Cruiser as they do on a decaying Ford Bronco II. Meet the Roofnest Condor 2 XXL Air, a gigantic hardshell tent with 51 square feet of mattress space for you and three other guests. Or enough room for you, five adult raccoons, a 30-rack of Natty Lights, and a deck of cards. Well, you get the point; its 95-by-80-inch sleeping space is like a California King mattress, only bigger. The Condor 2 XXL Air is made from compounded PC-ABS (happy polycarbonate acrylonitrile butadiene styrene month, for those who celebrate), which is a good thing because it’s a material that offers high-impact strength, is still somewhat lightweight considering its damage resistance, and is more affordable than carbon fiber. Its outer shell is coated with Line-X, or the same stuff used as spray-in bedliner for trucks, and probably what the neighborhood kids just repainted grandma’s Mercury Grand Marquis with—be careful what your kids watch on YouTube.RoofnestMeasuring 88 x 60 inches while closed, the Condor 2 XXL Air shouldn’t be worn as a hat. Put it on your Jeep instead, or any vehicle with crossbars at least 32 inches apart. It weighs 205 pounds and is 15 inches tall (closed), which gives it a BMI of 640. Perhaps it should get a blood test. You can rest easy awaiting those results on a 2.0-inch-thick, self-inflating foamcore mattress along with Roofnest’s bamboo sheet set and poofy blankie.Another nifty feature is the skylight, which could be great for additional interior lighting and stargazing should you leave it unzipped. The interior structure is aluminum and offers 50 inches of headroom. It has three LED lights, many pockets for shoes and other gear, and HVAC ports for portable air conditioners or heaters. Roofnest offers crossbars that attach to the outer shell with a 150-pound weight capacity that allow for additional mounting points for shovels, jerry cans, or more LED lights.RoofnestRoofnest claims the Condor 2 XXL Air is the largest hardshell rooftop in the world, and to that we say, gosh, we would certainly hope so. Its interior dimensions surpass other big tents, such as the iKamper Skycamp DLX, Tuff Stuff Overland Elite Rooftop, and Roam’s Vagabond XL RTT. Say, when does a two-story Ford Bronco require an emergency exit? Because the Condor 2 XXL Air can accommodate so many occupants, you can mount a second ladder to it. We haven’t yet toured the spaciousness of the Condor 2 XXL Air, but we have enjoyed hardshell sleeping during a bunch of dispersed camping with a Roofnest Condor Overland 2 XL and loved its ease of use. Like that tent, setting up this larger one looks as easy as unlocking two straps, moving a center drawstring, and then pulling out the stored ladder to unfold the base. The rain canopy remains attached. It’s as easy as starting the campfire with gasoline. Please don’t do that.RoofnestWe love how easy hardshells can be to set up, but that convenience doesn’t come cheap. The Roofnest Condor 2 XXL can be ordered today on its website with a price tag of $4395. It does offer four other tents—all part of Roofnest’s Condor Air series—that vary in size and price. Raccoons and marshmallows are sold separately.
