Ram Confirms Its Full-Size Electric Truck Is Now Officially Dead

  • Ram says it has discontinued development of its full-size electric pickup truck dubbed the REV.
  • The company says the decision was based on slowing demand in North America for full-size electric trucks.
  • Along with that decision, Ram says it is renaming the forthcoming plug-in hybrid truck from Ramcharger to REV.

Ram is throwing in the towel on its full-size electric truck before it even entered the game. The automaker today announced that it is ending development of the regularly delayed cargo-bed-toting EV that it dubbed the REV. Ram blames slowing demand in North America for its decision to sign the pickup’s death certificate. Now, the focus moves towards the brand’s upcoming plug-in hybrid truck, which has also experienced delays. While it debuted bearing the Ramcharger moniker, Ram says it has decided to ditch that name, which was once used on Dodge’s large body-on-frame SUVs. Instead, the full-size PHEV pickup will adopt the name of its fallen comrade and be called the REV. View PhotosRamPlans for an all-electric Ram pickup date back to 2021, when Mike Koval, Ram’s then CEO, made big promises about how the truck would exceed the expectations of customers as well as the capabilities of its competitors. While the concept that debuted at CES 2023 drew a lot of interest, the eventual production version’s reveal felt anticlimactic, as it didn’t fulfill earlier claims and lacked some of the concept’s most interesting features. That was followed by production delays, canceling the larger battery that provided more driving range, and prioritizing the production of the plug-in hybrid truck. All of that—combined with the current financial struggles facing Ram’s parent company, Stellantis—and it’s not entirely surprising that the plug has been pulled on the EV truck. However, the PHEV variant, now formerly known as the Ramcharger, has faced its own setbacks. Earlier this year, Ram announced that it was pushing back the truck’s launch date, which was originally planned for the second half of 2025. Following today’s news, Car and Driver reached out to a Ram spokesperson to ask when the PHEV is expected to go on sale, and all they would say is “sometime in 2026.” That obviously leaves a lot of wiggle room.Related Stories
