Whereas the Gran Turismo series of games goes to great lengths to accurately model actual real-world car models, auto manufacturers won’t touch Grand Theft Auto with a 10-foot pole. It’s not hard to see why: crashing an Acura NSX by messing up an apex is hardly the same thing as using one to rob a bank, even if both events are purely digitized fiction. However, the latest Grand Theft Auto VI trailer is out, and even if its cars have made-up names, they sure do look like the vehicles you see in modern traffic.Rockstar GamesThings kick off with a barely disguised Ford F-150 Raptor, which in the new GTA goes by the name Caracara 4×4. Rockstar Games even went so far as to give the truck “Vapid” in huge lettering on the grille to match the one found on the actual off-road truck. Nearby is a late ’50s Cadillac Eldorado, except with only one bullet taillight on each tailfin rather than the two on the actual car.Rockstar GamesThe hero car–or perhaps antihero car is more appropriate—is a battered old Ford Ranchero, except it’s branded as a Vapid Ute. In various scenes, you can see stand-ins for the Chevy Corvette, Mercedes-Benz C-class, Lamborghini Aventador, and Porsche 718 Cayman. Longtime GTA fans will be pleased to see that the Banshee is back, looking even more like the Dodge Viper it’s based on.Rockstar GamesRockstar GamesPart of the appeal of GTA is that it virtually lets you play out a Fast and Furious movie, albeit one with even more gunplay. Halfway through the video-game trailer, a pickup based on the Ram 3500 dually is seen dragging what appears to be a bank safe down the road, not unlike the scene from Fast Five with two Dodge Chargers.Rockstar GamesThere’s a mix of current and vintage-look cars on offer here, everything from a police cruiser that looks an awful lot like a Ford Crown Victoria, to a four-door Chevy Chevelle clone, to a counterfeit Porsche Macan. There are also multiple modified cars based on real-world trends, from Texas-style “swanga” extended-hub wheels to the massively oversized aftermarket chrome wheels of a donk Caprice.Rockstar GamesRockstar Games recently announced a delay in GTA 6′s release until next year, which has bitterly disappointed fans. However, given the level of detail that’s clearly in the pipeline here, it’ll probably be worth the wait. In the meantime, you can stack up laps in Gran Turismo and imagine how different that game would be if it had grenade launchers.Related StoriesBrendan McAleer is a freelance writer and photographer based in North Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
