My Chevy Loyalty Is Being Tested, I Have a 2023 Chevy Tahoe With a Failed Transmission, and Now Our 2024 Silverado Is Recalled For Engine Failure

A family that owns two newer Chevrolet vehicles will be without both for quite some time.

Imagine owning a Chevy Tahoe and a Chevy Silverado, and both are down for major repairs. Having one vehicle down is bad enough, but having both vehicles in the shop at the same time is the worst.

It’s the situation that Ashley Cross finds themselves in now. Ashley’s 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe is currently at the Chevrolet dealer for a new transmission, and her husband’s 2024 Chevrolet Silverado RST pickup is scheduled to receive a new engine as part of the GM engine recall.

Ashley shared her dilemma on the Chevy Tahoe Owners Group Facebook page.

She says, I’m seeking advice. Does anyone have email addresses for Chevy Corporate, GM Corporate, GM Parts, or legal, or know how to contact Virginia’s attorney general? I’m trying to get help on this.

My 2023 Chevy Tahoe Z71 is currently in the shop due to a transmission issue, and as of today, there’s still no update on when a part will be available.

Apparently, between 2,000 and 4,000 customers are waiting on this part, and GM can’t even give their owners a time frame, let alone show some compassion for their customers.

And yet, we are still obligated and expected to continue making loan payments on an undriveable vehicle due to a defective part.

My Chevy loyalty is being tested.

I have been a long-standing GM/Chevy customer/owner for over 25 years, including my family and my husband, who currently owns a 2024 Silverado RST.

We accidentally found out from the GMC dealership, where our truck is currently sitting, that its engine is in the process of being recalled for engine failure on specific models, and it is one of them.

There is nothing they can do to prevent the engine failure until GM issues the recall.

What also infuriates me is that, given the valve body issue on my Chevy Tahoe, why wasn’t a recall notification sent out? I had my Tahoe in for an oil change back in March. Although my truck didn’t have transmission issues at the time, it’s still good to be aware of potential problems. This way, owners can stay informed and not be overly concerned about losing acceleration or having their brakes lock up while driving.

We are beyond frustrated and still have no answers.

I feel awful for some of you who have waited several months or more and have yet to receive a part or even a simple update on when we could expect parts to be available.

I completely understand this is a nationwide issue, and thousands are waiting for this part, but the lack of communication with owners is inexcusable.

About a month or more ago, I started my Tahoe and was pulling out of the driveway when I went to accelerate. It felt like the car switched into neutral, and I had no acceleration.

An alert popped up on my dashboard saying, “Decreased acceleration, drive with caution.”

As I shifted the Tahoe into reverse, it jumped/jerked, and it did it again two more times while I tried to finish parking while switching gears.

The check engine light also came on.

My Chevrolet dealer told me to keep an eye on it, and a couple of days later, the check engine light went off. Well, a week later, all this happened AGAIN while I was driving up a steep hill with cars behind me, and my acceleration went out again.

So now, my transmission had to be taken completely apart, and they found that the valve body, which allows the fluids to flow in the transmission properly, is defective/broken.

This part is currently on back order, and GM has not issued a statement or recall. Apparently, this issue has been affecting many newer model Tahoes, and GM is struggling to meet the demand for the defective part.

My Tahoe has been at the Chevrolet dealer for almost a month now, with no update on when to expect the part or when it will be fixed.

What’s going on with the GM transmission recall?

A report from GM Authority says the long wait for Chevrolet Tahoe transmission parts under the GM recall is primarily due to a national backorder of the transmission control valve bodies, a key component in the repair of the affected vehicles. GM has not provided a clear timeline for when these parts will be readily available, leading to significant delays for owners like Ashley and her Tahoe needing repairs.

Here’s a more detailed explanation:

  • Backordered Parts: The core issue is a shortage of transmission control valve bodies, which are necessary for fixing the problem described in the recall.
  • No ETA: GM has not publicly stated when they expect the backorder to be resolved, leaving customers in the dark about when their vehicles will be repaired.
  • Reported Delays: Affected owners have reported waiting anywhere from six weeks to over seven months for the parts to become available. Some have even been told it could take a year, according to a report on WBIW.com.
  • Workarounds: Some dealerships have opted for full transmission replacements as a solution, but this is not a consistent practice, and some owners have had to wait months before being offered this alternative.
  • Impacted Vehicles: The recall affects a wide range of GM vehicles, including the Chevy Tahoe, Silverado, and Suburban, as well as other models, equipped with the GM eight-speed and 10-speed automatic transmissions.
  • Recall Details: The recall, identified as Special Coverage (N242454441), addresses a potential transmission control module software issue that can lead to increased risk of crashes, according to www.valerolaw.com.

On top of that, Ashley’s husband’s 2024 Chevrolet Silverado RST pickup is getting a new engine under GM’s recall campaign.

What is the issue with her husband’s 2024 Chevrolet Silverado RST engine recall?

1. The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado RST, along with other models equipped with the 6.2-liter V8 engine, is subject to a recall due to potential manufacturing defects in the connecting rod and/or crankshaft. These defects can lead to engine damage and engine failure, potentially causing the engine to stall unexpectedly while driving, including while towing.

2. The issue stems from flaws in the engine’s internal components, which can lead to a loss of power and ultimately, engine failure, according to a CBS News report.

3. The recall impacts a significant number of vehicles, including over 107,000 Silverado 1500s in the U.S. and approximately 721,000 vehicles across GM’s lineup globally. GM has identified the problem as a manufacturing defect affecting specific engines from the 2021-2024 model years.

4. To address the recall, GM dealers will inspect affected vehicles. If the inspection indicates a problem, the engine may be repaired or replaced. If the engine passes inspection, the oil filter will be replaced, and the vehicle will be switched to a higher viscosity oil.

The recall highlights the potential for serious safety hazards due to engine failure, especially when towing, and underscores the importance of addressing the issue promptly.

In The End

This unexpected double whammy left Ashley and her family in a truly tough spot. With both their 2023 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Chevy Silverado sidelined for significant repairs, their daily routines are completely upended.

What should have been the convenience of owning two reliable, newer vehicles turned into a logistical nightmare, leaving them to navigate work, school, and errands without their primary mode of transportation.

This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a significant disruption to their lives, highlighting the frustrations that can arise when even the newest vehicles face severe mechanical failures.
