- We put the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E-Performance through our usual testing regimen and found it to be the quickest non-EV four-door we’ve tested.
- We blasted to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds, 100 mph in 5.9 seconds, and on through the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds at 131 mph.
- The plug-in hybrid’s acceleration is aided by a 201-hp rear-mounted electric motor that brings the GT63 S’s total output to 831 horsepower.
Welcome to Car and Driver’s Testing Hub, where we zoom in on the test numbers. We’ve been pushing vehicles to their limits since 1956 to provide objective data to bolster our subjective impressions (you can see how we test here). Our recent instrumented testing of the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E-Performance 4-Door revealed something interesting: The addition of plug-in hybrid power transformed this sports sedan from merely blisteringly quick to the type of quick that makes you say, “Holy hell! What just happened?“ In our testing, we launched to 60 mph in just 2.4 seconds, which makes it the quickest non-EV four-door we’ve ever tested. The GT63 S goes on to hit 100 mph in 5.9 seconds and clear the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds at 131 mph. Holy hell, indeed. To put the new PHEV model’s performance in context, the non-plug-in version we tested in 2019 employed the same 630-hp twin-turbo V-8 and did the 60-mph sprint in 2.8 seconds. The 2019 car also took 6.9 ticks to hit 100 mph (a full second longer), and it ran the quarter-mile in 11.0 seconds flat at 125 mph.
The PHEV’s extra quickness over its predecessor comes in spite of it tipping the scales at 5252 pounds, some 570 pounds heavier. That’s because, in addition to the 630-hp turbocharged V-8 up front, the GT63 S hybrid adds a 201-hp electric motor with its own two-speed transmission at the rear, bringing its total output to 831 hp. According to Mercedes, the 5-kWh battery (rated by the EPA for one mile of range) is only capable of supplying the full 201-hp figure to the motor for 10 seconds (at which point you’d be doing in excess of 130 mph); beyond that, output drops to a continuous 94 ponies. Where does the GT63 S E-Performance 4-Door stack up on our acceleration leaderboard? Well, the 2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is our current 60-mph king, as it’s the first model we’ve tested to break the two-second barrier, doing the deed in just 1.9 seconds. The GT63 S hybrid’s 2.4-second result would tie it for fourth on our list of the quickest EVs we’ve tested, and put it in on par with the Ferrari 296GTB hybrid, the quickest rear-wheel-drive car we’ve tested. It’s also just a smidge behind internal-combustion exotics such as the Lamborghini Huracán Performante, the McLaren 750S, and the Porsche 911 Turbo S with the Lightweight package. After a brief stint as a detailer for a local dealership group in college, he knew he needed a more permanent way to drive all the new cars he couldn’t afford and decided to pursue a career in auto writing. By hounding his college professors at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was able to travel Wisconsin seeking out stories in the auto world before landing his dream job at Car and Driver.
