- Lucid’s new mid-size EV platform will underpin an SUV (possibly called Earth), and it will get an off-road variant akin to the Gravity X concept.
- The sub-$50,000 EV SUV is still set to start production late next year, per Lucid interim CEO Marc Winteroff.
- We expect the “Earth’s” off-road variant will follow sometime in early 2027, with a mid-size sedan likely arriving by the end of 2028.
We’ve known that Lucid Motors is developing a new platform that will underpin a mid-size SUV with a sub-$50,000 base price. Now we know that the upcoming SUV—possibly called Earth, based on a trademark filing—will share a platform with an off-road-oriented model based on the Gravity X concept that debuted last month at Pebble Beach.A Lucid exec previously told CarBuzz that the company’s mid-size program will feature three models, including the SUV that has been teased. While a sedan to compete with the Tesla Model 3 is the other variant, interim CEO Marc Winteroff, who recently spoke to reporters ahead of the Munich auto show, said that the mysterious third model will take cues from the Gravity X. The latter featured chunkier all-terrain tires, a lifted ride height, a wider track, front tow hooks, restyled bumpers, skid plates to protect its underbelly, and a low-profile roof rack with front-mounted lights.Lucid MotorsWinteroff said the “Earth” SUV is still slated to start production by the end of next year. However, he also spoke about Lucid’s financial outlook. “Our funding is enough to get us into the second half of next year,” he said. “We planned to do the [start of production] of the mid-size platform end of next year, and then we’re ramping up from there. So that tells you that additional funds will be needed to get there.”If Lucid indeed gets the necessary funding, the mid-size SUV’s off-road-focused offspring should follow shortly after the standard model; we’d guess sometime in early 2027. With the sedan likely the third member of the mid-size trifecta, it will arrive a bit later. Winteroff said the last of its new EVs will follow about a year and a half after the second, so think late 2028. These new Lucids will be built at the company’s new AMP-2 factory in Saudi Arabia. We’re told the mid-size platform is also being considered for fleet use, namely a potential suitor for future Uber robotaxis, as the ride-hailing service recently closed a $300 million investment in the nascent automotive brand.
