I Switched From Polestar 2 Dual Motor To Single Motor And Gained 40% More Range While Only Losing A Small Amount Of Performance, Making It The Smarter Choice For Daily Driving

Tesla has always thrived in chaos. Elon Musk built an empire on the idea that disruption and volatility could fuel growth. But the bloom is beginning to fade. Software delays, pricing whiplash, labor disputes, and the endless promise of “Full Self Driving” that remains perpetually on the horizon have created gaps in Tesla’s once formidable armor. The electric frontier is no longer Tesla’s to command alone.
Rivals like Polestar see an opening, and with Volvo’s engineering heritage and a growing EV lineup, the brand has been steadily positioning itself as a credible challenger.
“I recently moved from my leased 2022 Dual Motor LR w/ Pilot Package to a 2024 Single Motor LR w/ Pilot Plus. It was cheaper for me to purchase a 2024 CPO. After a few months of driving, here are my thoughts for anyone considering the change.
1. Range & Charging
Getting ~40% more range with the 2024 model.
My 30-mile daily commute now only needs one weekly charge, compared to topping off midweek before.
Huge quality-of-life improvement and less charging stress.
2. Performance
Even with the single motor, this is still a 300 HP car – plenty quick for freeway merging and daily driving.
Feels like a small step down from the dual motor, but completely fine for commuting and shuttling kids.
I rarely floor it, so I don’t miss the extra power much.
3. Handling & Ride
Without the front motor, the front end feels lighter.
I live in Southern California. The weather is great, but the roads are horrible. Though the ride is not as jarring as the dual motor, I still feel (and hear) the bumps in the patched roads.
Benefits:
Smoother ride over bumps. More acceptable, but rougher than my old BMW 2001 530i.
Slightly tighter turning radius vs. my 2022 Dual Motor.
4. Harman Kardon Sound System
Definitely an upgrade over the base audio.
Still not as rich as the ELS system in my wife’s 2013 Acura RDX with w/technology package.
Tried EQ adjustments, but it hasn’t fully solved the flatness.
5. Regen Braking
Noticeably less aggressive – takes about twice the distance to slow down compared to dual motor. This makes sense since there is only 1 motor braking.
Requires more frequent foot brake use, which takes some getting used to.
6. Plus Features
Love the glass roof and ventilated seats, but…
In San Diego summers, the cabin heats up quickly.
Added tinted windows and a sunroof shade to manage heat.
Winter sunlight is nice, but in summer, I often wear a hat on long drives.
Haven’t been able to test the heated seats and steering wheel.
7. Google Built-In
The Google entertainment system is a real game-changer:
Instant readiness, maps and apps are ready as soon as I get in the car.
No more 4–5 minute delays for Maps to load like in my 2022 model.
Backup sensors are more accurate; they no longer falsely stop me when backing into my driveway.
Summary
If I could go back, I wish the 2024 version had been my first lease in 2022.
The efficiency improvements and tech upgrades make it feel like a more polished car overall.
I wouldn’t personally pay $4K extra for the Plus Package (Harman Kardon, ventilated seats, sunroof) if buying new, but as a CPO deal, this setup feels perfect.
The single motor easily meets my daily needs while delivering major range gains.
Overall, this is exactly what I expected and more.
My hope is that Polestar gets its act together and delivers a compelling car, inclusive of technology, in the next 5-6 years when I may want to upgrade.”

This measured testimony from Reddit is a striking contrast to Tesla’s early reputation for inspiring fervent, almost evangelical loyalty. Here we have an owner discussing a switch not with bitterness, but with quiet satisfaction. The numbers speak for themselves. A 40 percent range gain thanks to the new 82 kWh battery, charging speeds of up to 205 kW compared to the older 150 kW system, and a smoother ride without the extra front motor weight. These are incremental but meaningful improvements that matter more in daily driving than headline-grabbing acceleration times.
Polestar’s 2 Driving Experience

  • The Polestar 2 offers a sporty driving experience with responsive handling and quick acceleration, particularly in the dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration.
  • The Polestar 2 features a minimalist and modern design, both inside and out, with a focus on sustainable and high-quality materials.
  • The infotainment system is powered by Android Automotive OS, which provides a seamless and intuitive user experience with integrated Google Maps and Google Assistant.
  • Polestar, with its Volvo heritage, places a strong emphasis on safety, and the Polestar 2 comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems.

Polestar’s execution is far from flawless. Some drivers report the suspension feels unsettled on undulating highways, the regen braking is noticeably weaker than the dual-motor setup, and heat buildup through the panoramic roof can become uncomfortable in summer.

Even the Plus Package, praised for features like the Harman Kardon audio and upgraded seating materials, comes with its own confusion about what is included without additional options. These are not deal-breaking flaws, but they highlight that Polestar is still refining its identity.
Tesla’s Difficult Future
Tesla, meanwhile, is confronting its most difficult chapter yet. Revenue in the first quarter of 2024 dropped 9 percent year-over-year to $19.3 billion, with net income down 71 percent to $409 million. In Europe, sales fell 40 percent compared to the previous year, and in China, BYD overtook Tesla in the fourth quarter, delivering 600,000 EVs compared to Tesla’s 495,570. For a company that once predicted 50 percent growth annually through 2030, the reality is sobering. These are the moments when nimble rivals can take advantage.

Polestar is showing momentum in this environment. In the first half of 2025, the company sold 30,319 cars, a 51 percent increase from the same period the year before. In the second quarter alone, it delivered 18,049 units, representing 38 percent growth year-over-year. While these figures remain small compared to Tesla’s output, they are evidence of a brand that is gaining credibility, not just awareness. Each customer story, like the one above, adds weight to Polestar’s image as a polished alternative.
Polestar’s 2 Range & More

  • While the Polestar 2’s range is competitive, it falls short of some of its rivals. However, it supports fast charging, which can replenish the battery quickly.
  • The Polestar 2 occupies a unique space in the market as a premium electric hatchback with a sporty character, appealing to buyers who want something different from a traditional sedan or SUV.
  • The Polestar 2 is generally praised for its solid build quality and the use of premium materials throughout the cabin.
  • The Polestar 2 faces stiff competition from a growing number of electric vehicles, including the Tesla Model 3, BMW i4, and Lucid Air Pure.

The significance of this shift lies not in raw numbers but in consumer behavior. As one commenter put it after testing a 2024 loaner, the efficiency was “22 kWh per 100 miles without much effort at all.” Another praised the infotainment’s instant responsiveness, a small detail that makes a large difference in daily use. These are practical gains that improve the ownership experience. Tesla once dominated this space with over-the-air updates and seamless integration, but the gap is closing quickly.
Polestar is not yet poised to dethrone Tesla, but it does not have to. Its strategy is to position itself as the rational alternative, much like Audi did against BMW and Mercedes in the 1980s. Tesla remains the industry’s giant, yet its aura of invincibility is diminishing. The Reddit post captures this perfectly with its closing line: “My hope is that Polestar gets its act together and delivers a compelling car inclusive of technology in the next 5–6 years when I may want to upgrade.” That is not the voice of disillusionment but of measured optimism. It is also a warning sign for Tesla that the market it created is now ready to move forward with or without it.
