Although the anti-Tesla madness has subsided a bit as America turns its endless ire toward new social topics, quite a few Tesla owners are considering what they might drive instead. We know this from delivery reports. With fewer Tesla vehicles being sold, and with used Tesla prices dropping as well, we know that folks now see the brand’s value as somewhat diminished. So, if you are thinking of selling your Tesla Model Y, or any Tesla model, here are some words of wisdom from a fellow owner who sold a Tesla Model Y.
Before we begin, let’s quote ME’s introduction on this subject fully and accurately. ME posted the following, which we have edited only for brevity:
Sold my Model Y after a year, and here is my advice to new buyers. I believe in electric vehicles (EVs). Despite my negative experience with the Model Y Performance, I still consider EVs to be the future and suitable for many situations. My next vehicle will likely be an EV as well.
Reasons To Sell Your Model Y
ME sure had a lot of negative things to say about the Tesla Model Y. ME listed no less than ten good arguments for ditching a Model Y, and started by saying, “There are a lot of negatives that eventually led me to get rid of the vehicle.” We will list the negatives and then explore some of the comments others made about the validity of these reasons.
- The build quality and quality control of the vehicle are terrible.”
- The ride quality is harsh.
- The interior quality is subpar.
- This vehicle performs poorly on anything other than asphalt.
- The Model Y features unnecessarily large rims that limit tire options and are susceptible to curb rash if not handled carefully.
- This car experiences rapid depreciation.
- Although the straight-line performance is impressive, this vehicle is not designed for sportsy driving.
- The range is significantly less than the advertised figure, varying with use.
- Many features seem underdeveloped.
- The service center experience was not good.
If you are a fan of the Tesla brand, or even a casual observer, you will no doubt agree with at least some of what ME has posted regarding the negatives of Tesla Model Y ownership. Here are some comments that offered opinions on this list of negatives ME posted, along with our own observations.
NRB said, “Build quality/harsh ride, all well documented.” We’d have to agree with the the ride quality. When your author tested a Model Y it felt considerably more harsh than a Mustang Mach-E I drove back to back as a comparison vehicle. In addition, I would tie the unreasonably sized tires that ME offers as a reason to the harsh ride. These two go hand in hand.
WP offered a comment about the false range claims made by Tesla (and some might say the EPA). WP said, “Tesla is hurting electric cars in general by lying about their range. I always get around 60-80% of what it says, and 80% if I’m driving slightly downhill.” While it is certainly a common topic, reduced range is not just a myth to many Tesla owners. So many owners felt that the range was subpar, they banded together to sue Tesla over the issue. Reuters even claimed that Tesla had employees whose job was to suppress owners’ opinions about improper range results.
As to the interior quality and features that seem less than finalized, these are complaints that many Tesla owners have shared over the years, along with a legion of reviewers. It’s a fact that FSD is not yet finalized, and it is hard to argue that Tesla, while luxury-priced, offers luxury-level seats in its vehicles. They feel more like a mainstream base vehicle in terms of materials.
Tesla Model Y – Why Not to Sell – The Positives
ME also offered this list of positive reasons why one may not want to sell.
- It is a practical car with ample cargo capacity.
- The car is quite fast, capable of out-accelerating many other vehicles on the road (Although after 65 it tapers down).
- Both the steering wheel and the accelerator pedal are very responsive.
- Similar to other electric vehicles, it may be cost-advantageous over internal combustion engine cars, depending on your charging setup.
- The car’s software is excellent, possibly the best in its class, with a well-designed and responsive interface.
- The charging network is great.
ME concludes his manifesto by saying that he recommends against the Model Y. What’s the interesting twist on this whole subject? Well, ME wrote this overview before the anti-Tesla madness began. It was written back when every pundit and every politician was saying, there’s no way Donald Trump would ever be elected President again, and the folks at Electrek and Inside EVs were still fawning over Tesla. Obviously, Tesla is now the brand to buy if you want to have your vehicle keyed the first week you have it and if you wish to live like a pariah.
So what do you think?
Has the Juniper solved every issue that ME outlined?
Given that being anti-Elon is now in fashion, would you still buy one? Tell us in the comments below.
