There’s a particular kind of betrayal that occurs when the vehicle you depend on for daily transportation becomes a threat to your health. Cars are supposed to be safe havens, protective shells that carry us through our daily lives while shielding us from the elements.
When that protection fails and the vehicle itself becomes the source of illness, it creates a profound sense of vulnerability that extends far beyond mechanical inconvenience. Modern vehicles, with their complex climate control systems and sealed cabins, can create conditions that foster problems invisible to the casual observer but devastating to human health.
Robert Joseph Taylor’s recent experience with his Chevy Equinox EV perfectly illustrates how hidden automotive problems can have serious health consequences. His Facebook post reads like a medical mystery that took weeks to solve:
“So folks just remember I love my car and I’m not here saying anything bad about GM or Equinox EV…. There’s tons of things, I love about it including a road, feel that feels just as good if not better than a plastic Buick from the ’80s…. A few weeks ago I noticed a lot of condensation forming on the inside of my windshield…. And I also noticed that my floor mats, drivers and passenger side were damp and had water on them. I honestly thought I spilled something on them because I constantly drink coffee and tea in my car…. And there were cups down there…. I also noticed as well that I was experiencing. Asthmatic symptoms and just figured. It was the fact that I was in Dusty environments in and out of work. I was also noticing sharpshooting pains all over my body including in my chest. Turns out I’ve got mold poisoning and the cause of mold poisoning is my car….. The mats have been wet since I purchased the vehicle and I didn’t think anything of it because I honestly thought that it was a little bit of condensation coming out of the AC because I like to keep my car cold. I’ve noticed as the nights are cooler and the days are still warm that I ended up having more and more condensation inside my car to a point where it wouldn’t be able to fix itself with the defroster so I got worried if things get colder very soon which it will in the next couple of weeks I’m going to end up with ice and I’m not going to be able to drive my car. GM and Myers and my service tax have been absolutely wonderful to me. They have gone into their way. They put me in a rental and they’ve treated me just like a king. I am a super fan of Mars and how they treat people in our area in Ottawa…. I would personally recommend for Meijer for warranty work The car is sitting with no interior left in it with fans running in it for the last 11 days…. The dealership has ordered a full cabin cleaning plus a full air conditioning system cleaning to make sure that there’s no mold… The carpets are garbage and being replaced and they were covered with black mold which is pretty difficult to see, especially if your mats are black….. And with all of this Trump stuff we’re not getting any parts sent up to Canada and there are over 2,000 people in Canada now. Waiting for OnStar modules from GM…. The car drives great but I didn’t just buy it for the ride. I also bought it for the technology. The only thing I’m saying is enjoy your ride…. Personally, I can’t wait to get mine back…. Just keep an eye out and watch out for your health and your family.”

Taylor’s initial dismissal of the symptoms as unrelated to his vehicle reflects how we often fail to connect environmental health issues with their actual sources. His assumption that the damp floor mats resulted from spilled beverages and that his respiratory symptoms came from dusty work environments shows how easy it is to rationalize away warning signs. The gradual onset of symptoms, from condensation to respiratory distress to sharp pains throughout his body, demonstrates how mold exposure can create a cascade of health problems that worsen over time without intervention.
How To Identify Respiratory Problems

  • Gradual onset of respiratory problems, unexplained body pains, and persistent condensation issues should prompt immediate investigation rather than rationalization.
  • Addressing moisture problems immediately when detected can prevent serious health consequences and extensive vehicle damage that requires major repairs.
  • Proper dealer and manufacturer response to serious defects can maintain customer relationships even during difficult situations involving health and safety.
  • Sharing experiences with hidden vehicle problems helps other owners recognize similar issues and take appropriate action to protect their health and families.

The discovery that his floor mats had been wet since he purchased the vehicle reveals a manufacturing or delivery issue that went undetected for an extended period. Taylor’s assumption that the moisture was normal condensation from his preference for cold air conditioning shows how consumers often adapt to problems rather than questioning whether they should exist. This adaptation can be dangerous when it involves health hazards that compound over time. The fact that black mold was growing on black mats, making it “pretty difficult to see,” illustrates how these problems can remain hidden until they reach dangerous levels.

Don Niswanger’s practical question about the moisture source led to Taylor’s explanation that frozen AC lines had leaked throughout the vehicle. This technical detail reveals how complex modern climate control systems can fail in ways that create perfect conditions for mold growth. The combination of moisture, warmth, and enclosed spaces provides an ideal environment for dangerous mold species to flourish. Taylor’s description of waking up to find “condensation a wet dashboard, and wet carpets” shows how the problem had progressed beyond simple dampness to active water accumulation that the vehicle’s systems couldn’t manage.
The health implications of Taylor’s experience extend beyond his individual case to highlight broader concerns about vehicle interior air quality. His diagnosis of mold poisoning, with symptoms including respiratory distress and sharp pains throughout his body, demonstrates how automotive problems can have serious medical consequences. The fact that he initially attributed these symptoms to other environmental factors shows how difficult it can be to identify the actual source of health problems when they develop gradually.

This situation mirrors what other vehicle owners have discovered about hidden health hazards, as one Tesla owner found that a dream Model S Plaid purchase turned into a health nightmare when hidden mold and water damage were discovered in the vehicle.
The dealership’s response to Taylor’s situation demonstrates how warranty coverage should work when serious defects are discovered. The provision of a rental vehicle, complete interior removal, and comprehensive cleaning and replacement of affected components shows the kind of support that builds customer loyalty even in difficult circumstances.
Taylor’s mention of parts delays due to political trade issues affecting OnStar modules reveals how global supply chain disruptions can impact even routine automotive repairs. His observation that “over 2,000 people in Canada now. Waiting for OnStar modules from GM” shows how these delays affect large numbers of customers who purchased vehicles expecting full functionality. This situation highlights how modern vehicles depend on complex electronic systems that can be vulnerable to supply chain disruptions, leaving customers without features they paid for and expected to use.
The broader implications of Taylor’s experience extend to questions about quality control and testing in modern vehicle manufacturing. The fact that a brand-new vehicle could have AC system problems severe enough to cause dangerous mold growth suggests gaps in pre-delivery inspection or testing procedures. Modern vehicles undergo extensive testing, but Taylor’s experience shows how some problems may only become apparent under specific usage conditions or climate scenarios. His case demonstrates the importance of early detection and prompt action when moisture problems are discovered in vehicles.
Did He Hate His Vehicle?
Taylor’s perspective, emphasized his love for the vehicle while documenting serious problems, shows how owners can advocate for proper repairs without abandoning their investment. His statement that “I love my car and I’m not here saying anything bad about GM or Equinox EV” while detailing serious health consequences demonstrates mature consumer advocacy. This approach likely contributed to the positive response he received from the dealership and manufacturer, showing how constructive communication can lead to better outcomes for everyone involved. The situation reflects broader challenges with EV climate systems, as other owners have reported issues including heating failure, AC breakdown, and other HVAC problems in their Equinox EVs after just months of ownership.
Problems Mold Growth In Cars Can Cause

  • Mold growth in vehicles can cause serious health problems, including respiratory distress, chest pains, and systemic poisoning that may develop gradually over time.
  • Modern climate control systems can fail in ways that create perfect conditions for dangerous mold growth, particularly when AC lines freeze and leak moisture throughout the cabin.
  • Black mold on dark surfaces can be nearly invisible until it reaches dangerous levels, making early detection of moisture problems crucial for prevention.
  • Serious mold contamination may require complete interior removal, professional cleaning, and replacement of affected components to ensure safe occupancy.

The technical aspects of Taylor’s case, involving frozen AC lines and system failures, highlight how complex modern vehicle climate systems can create unexpected problems. Electric vehicles, with their different thermal management requirements and system designs, may be particularly susceptible to certain types of climate control failures.
His case also demonstrates the importance of proper warranty support and dealer relationships in resolving serious vehicle defects that affect health and safety. As more drivers transition to electric vehicles with sophisticated climate systems, experiences like Taylor’s help identify potential issues and proper responses that protect both vehicle integrity and occupant health. The situation also highlights how mold and moisture problems can affect various vehicle types, making awareness and early detection crucial for all drivers, regardless of their vehicle’s powertrain.
