GM Is Turning Its In-Car Cameras Into Security Recorders

Security or Privacy? In-car security is something automakers are now taking seriously.

Apart from keeping unwanted people out of your vehicle, brands now want to give customers the power to police those who happen to be inside the car as well. GM is the latest automotive group to release dedicated software that will enable the in-car camera to now function as a CCTV-like device, which sounds good at first but has also raised some privacy concerns. Chevrolett In-Car CCTV GM Authority reports that the auto giant is expanding the use of its in-vehicle camera systems through Over-The-Air updates (OTA).

Specifically, GM has rolled out features called Cabin Glance, Security Recording, and Surround Vision Recorder across models from Chevy, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac. Some cars got the update as early as last year, with more models set to get it by the end of this year for the 2027 production model year. The latest car to get the OTA update is the 2027 Chevrolet Traverse RS and High Country.

Essentially, the new feature will use the Traverse’s built-in interior cameras located on the overhead console to monitor the 2nd and 3rd rows. Cabin Glance can provide a view of the 2nd…
