Ford already revealed that its huge recall of 694,271 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles was going to cost an astronomical amount but today we learned how it is devastating company profits. Ford confirmed during its earning call that the recall of the vehicles because of a potential fuel leak from a cracked fuel injector will cost an astounding $570 million. Ford also reported tariffs will cost it $2 billion. The automaker is also losing more than a billion dollars on its EVs. Despite selling 14 percent more vehicles this year, compared to last, Ford’s net loss is $36 million.
Recalling Nearly 700,000 Bronco Sports and Escapes
According to paperwork filed with the National Traffic Safety Administration, Ford is recalling certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles equipped with 1.5L engines. A fuel injector may crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment. The leak could lead to a vehicle fire. Some of the vehicles have already been recalled for a similar problem. Ford stresses that all the vehicles need to be checked again.
Ford Vehicles Affected by the Recall
- 339,044 – 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sports
- 355,227 – 2022-2024 Ford Escapes
According to the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, “Ford has identified injector cracking on 8 vehicles experiencing underhood fire, 6 of which did not have updated engine control software. Ford is aware of no allegations of injuries associated with these 8 fires.”
A potential fuel odor may be the only warning that an owner receives. “A fuel leak may result in fuel odor both outside and inside the vehicle. If there is a fire, the customer may notice smoke or flames emanating from the engine compartment or underbody, or instrument cluster warnings.”
How Ford Will Fix the Issue
Ford is still working on a fix for the potentially cracked fuel injectors. In the meantime, owners will be called in for a software update that should lessen the chances of a fire. “Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their engine control software updated to include fuel injector leak detection as an interim remedy. There will be no charge for this service. Some owners may have already received this software update via the22S73/22V859 or 24S16/24V187 or 25S1/25V165 remedies. Ford will inform the owners that have had the temporary repair that they will not require the interim service fix.

Ford will send owners their interim notifications August 18, 2025 – August 22, 2025. No word on when the real remedy will be available. The NHTSA number for the recall is 25V467. The Ford number for the recall is 25S76.
Ford’s Future EV Plans
As part of today’s earnings report, Ford says it lost even more on EVs this year compared to last year. Ford has canceled plans for one EV, but it will continue to invest in future EV products.
“Our second-quarter performance shows the power of the Ford+ plan and continued execution on cost and quality,” said Jim Farley, Ford president and CEO. “Ford Pro is a unique competitive advantage driving both top and bottom-line growth while creating new high-margin revenue streams from software and physical services. Ford Blue delivered profitable market share gains, and we continue to improve the efficiency of our Ford Model e business. We have scheduled an event on Aug. 11 in Kentucky where we will share more about our plans to design and build breakthrough electric vehicles in America.”
The Kentucky plant is home to the Ford Expedition. It will be interesting to see what the new EV may be.
The cost of recalls is a huge issue for the company and improving overall quality has to be part of Ford’s future to stay profitable.
