- The Glass House served as Ford’s world HQ since 1956, but following the move to the new world headquarters nearby, the old building will be demolished.
- Its replacement is nearly twice as big as the Glass House, helping house double the employees to promote more collaboration.
Since 1956, the Ford Motor Company has conducted its primary operations from the huge glass-sided building located at 1 American Rd. in Dearborn, Michigan. However, that nearly 1 million-square-foot facility will be reduced to rubble in the coming years as the automaker prepares to move into its new world headquarters located on its nearby campus.Known as the Glass House, its 12 floors feature conference rooms and workstations for 2000 employees, and the building also has a 70,000-square-foot lobby and cafe area. While the new world HQ only has four floors, it has 2.1 million square feet of space, meaning it’s more than twice as big as its predecessor. It’s expected to be fully completed sometime in 2027, but the majority of the work is already done, and some employees have even started working there. Starting this November, though, all employees will move into their new corporate home.FordFord says its new world HQ can hold twice as many employees as the old one. That should help create an even more collaborative workplace, where executives, engineers, designers, and everyone in between can work more closely. Plus, it’s located on Ford’s vast Dearborn campus, so its nearly 14,000 employees are all within walking distance. As for the Glass House, Ford says it will spend the following 18 months sustainably decommissioning it before it is eventually completely demolished. The company also says it plans to work with the city of Dearborn to decide what to do with the site after the Glass House is leveled.Related Stories
