Yesterday, when announcing Ford’s earnings loss, CEO Jim Farley promised that the automaker has a huge announcement planned for August 11, 2025, in Kentucky, concerning Ford’s EV future. As I reported, as part of the earnings report, Ford says it lost even more on EVs this year compared to last year. Ford has canceled plans for one EV, but it will continue to invest in future EV products.
According to Ford CEO Jim Farley,
“We continue to improve the efficiency of our Ford Model e business. We have scheduled an event on Aug. 11 in Kentucky where we will share more about our plans to design and build breakthrough electric vehicles in America.” Farley said they will unveil a new EV and an EV platform.
Later during a question-and-answer session, Farley added more about the breakthrough moment the company is planning. “On Aug. 11, that will be a big day for all of us at Ford,” said Farley.
“This is a Model-T moment for us at Ford. A chance to bring a new family of vehicles to the world that offer incredible technology, efficiency, space, and features.”
Why the EV Platform is Important
Up until now, Ford has focused on two basic EVs. It has had good success with both the F- 150 Lightning and the Mustang Mach-E. Now, it appears that Ford is working on a more flexible EV platform that could support a number of different vehicles.

When Alan Mulally was running Ford, he eliminated a number of vehicle platforms and told engineers to focus on perfecting the ones they had. Mulally taught Ford to construct different vehicles all on the same platform. Mulally referred to the different vehicle configurations as “top hats”, that could be produced on the same platform. It sounds to me that Ford may have finally devised a flexible EV platform that can support differently configured vehicles. Ford referred to “top hats” for the EV market to better compete with the Chinese EVs flooding the world-wide market. Ford CEO Jim Farley worked for Alan Mulally and appears to be steering the company in Mulally’s efficient and cost-effective direction.
Why the Kentucky Announcement
Ford has a major assembly facility in Louisville, Kentucky. Right now, Louisville is building Ford Escapes and their Lincoln twins, the Lincoln Corsair. Ford is expected to retool the plant to build EVs. This is not to be confused with the Kentucky Truck Plant that builds Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators.
We will let you know about Ford’s future EV announcements and the automaker’s plans to build more affordable EVs. It will be fascinating to see if it is truly a “Model-T moment” for the company.
