Ford Again Delays Its Next-Gen Electric Truck and Van, Now Due in 2028

  • Ford has delayed its next-generation electric pickup truck and electric van to 2028.
  • This is the latest in a string of postponements for these two models, which were originally supposed to enter production in 2025.
  • Ford is instead shifting its focus to a new EV platform for smaller, more affordable vehicles, with an announcement about these plans expected on Monday, Aug. 11.

Ford plans to reveal a new EV strategy on Monday, August 11, that will center around a new “breakthrough” EV platform, something that CEO Jim Farley is describing as a “Model T moment.” But before we get to see what Ford is cooking up, a report from Automotive News states that Ford is delaying two of its other upcoming EVs, an electric full-size pickup truck and an electric van, to 2028.This isn’t the first time these vehicles have been pushed back. The electric truck, codenamed “T3” and expected to be a follow-up to the F-150 Lightning, was originally supposed to start production in 2025 before being pushed back to 2026 and then to 2027. Now, Ford has told suppliers that production of the truck won’t start at its BlueOval City factory in Tennessee until 2028.View PhotosFordThe electric van, which is likely a next-generation E-Transit, was initially due by the middle of this decade, Ford said in 2024, before the start of production was shifted to 2026. Now the van, which will be built in Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, Ohio, has also been postponed until 2028.Ford confirmed the delays in a statement to Car and Driver. “We communicated timing adjustments for our next-gen electric van and electric full-size pickup to our suppliers and employees in June,” a spokesperson said. “F-150 Lightning, America’s best-selling electric truck, and E-Transit continue to meet today’s customer needs.”Ford also said that it plans to start building prototypes for the T3 truck in 2027, and it has previously stated that the plant in Stanton, Tennessee, has a capacity of up to 500,000 trucks per year. Not much is known about the electric truck or van, but both are expected to be built around dedicated EV platforms, freed from the shackles of their gas-powered counterparts. While the T3 pickup and electric van are still on the way, Ford is reportedly shifting its attention to a new affordable EV platform designed for more compact vehicles. This new platform is expected to underpin several models, including a small pickup truck due out in 2027. This low-cost EV architecture is expected to be the central focus of Ford’s forthcoming announcement, so check back then for more details on the brand’s big EV plans.More on Ford’s EV Lineup
