In a recent X post, Elon Musk has suggested Tesla might build a brand new vehicle that combines elements of a Tesla Cybertruck and an airplane.
Musk made his comments in response to an X user, Unkonfined, who posted a video showing an AI-generated vehicle with the stainless steel exterior and angular features of a Cybertruck, but with airplane engines mounted at the back.
The vehicle also has stainless steel wings and overall features of a jetliner. The vehicle can be seen flying over an imagined futuristic city.
Together with this video, Unkonfined wrote…
“A Cybertruck merged with a passenger plane flying through a futuristic post-apocalyptic world run by robots.”
Interesting concept, but most people would dismiss it since it’s just an AI-generated visualization.
However, surprisingly, Elon Musk, after seeing Unkonfined’s post containing a flying Cybertruck, replied saying…
“Maybe Tesla should make this.”
Given Musk and his rocket company, SpaceX’s leading role in the space industry, and his now nearly decade-old promise to produce a flying car, this excited a lot of people.
However, Tesla engineers reacted to the flying Cybertruck by pouring some cold water on those expectations.
Specifically, Tesla’s lead Cybertruck engineer, Wes Morrill, and the official Cybertruck account managed by Tesla responded to Musk’s statement.
Given that Musk is their employer, the Cybertruck account and the Cybertruck engineer, as expected, responded positively to Musk’s flying Cybertruck idea.
The official Cybertruck account responded, writing…
“I can be anything you want me to be.”
The lead Cybertruck engineer responded by simply writing “Awesome.”
However, along with his post, Wes Morrill also expressed confusion about the idea of a flying Cybertruck, indicating that it’s not currently in development and that this is the first he’s heard of it.

Wes shared a GIF that reads…
“I think I got it, but just in case…
Tell me the whole thing again, I wasn’t listening.”
The lead Cybertruck engineer’s reaction shows that no real conversation took place among Tesla engineers about building a flying Cybertruck.
However, looking at the comments, many prominent Elon Musk fans responded to the Tesla CEO’s suggestion that the company should build a flying Cybertruck.
Tesla “online influencer” and overall Elon Musk hype man Omar Qazi, who goes by the X handle Whole Mars Catalog, responded positively, simply writing…
“Yeah, why not?”
EV news site Teslarati responded to Musk’s suggestion that maybe Tesla should build a flying Cybertruck, writing…
“We agree.”
However, despite the positive response from Tesla fans, Musk’s announcement of a flying Cybertruck seems less like a real product in development and more like an attempt to promote a product from Musk’s other company, xAI.
Musk has recently been aggressively promoting a new “Imagine” product launch by xAI, which allows users to generate a short video from a text prompt.
The overwhelming majority of Musk’s posts over the past few weeks have focused on xAI and specifically this “Imagine” video generation product.
By connecting the Imagine-generated video of a flying Cybertruck to an actual Tesla product under development, Musk is trying to attract attention for his AI product by leveraging the fascinating prospect of an airborne Cybertruck.
