Michael Chen is an early Cybertruck owner and says that in the 21 months since he bought his truck, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.
He shared an extensive list of issues, including some bizarre and dangerous problems.
In the bizarre category, Michael explains that the rear passenger-side window shattered spontaneously—not once, but twice.
He claims this was caused by misaligned window rails, which might also be related to another issue he has with his truck—a misaligned bed that prevents him from installing even Tesla-made bed accessories.
Besides the poor build quality of his Cybertruck, Michael notes that both electric motors failed, the inverter had to be replaced, and his brake calipers also malfunctioned.
Michael adds that all these problems were in addition to the eight physical recalls Tesla has issued for the vehicle.
Since buying his Cybertruck in January 2024, Michael says he has had to visit Tesla service every month.
This is definitely not ideal, but after months of effort and finally hiring a lemon law lawyer, Tesla agreed to buy back Michael’s truck.
Despite all this, he’s now thinking about leasing another Cybertruck once the buyback process is complete.
Michael shared his story on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners group on Facebook, saying:
“I received a buyback offer from Tesla. I’ve had issues almost every month since I bought my Cybertruck in January 2024—Vin 7xx.
I was one of the first to get a Cybertruck. The list of problems is long. I was considering leasing a new one and selling this back to Tesla.
Are newer owners having issues as well? I love the drive, but going to the shop regularly isn’t fun.”
Below his post, Michael listed all the issues he’s experienced with his truck.
He writes…
“Here were my issues:
1) Front and back motors failed, thankfully at different times.
2) Truck bed misaligned; couldn’t put accessories.
3) The same rear passenger window cracked spontaneously twice, caused by misaligned window rails.
4) Wipers broke a few times.
5) Brake calipers failed.
6) Rails replaced, but left a big gap.

7) The wiper fluid cap broke off.
8) Inverter replaced.
9) Regular recall issues.
10) Miscellaneous electrical warnings.”
This is definitely not ideal; however, looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners shared mixed opinions.
Some criticized Michael, saying he was complaining about “small issues” and had unrealistic expectations.
One Cybertruck owner said:
“I’ve had zero issues with my Cybertruck for over a year. Are your issues major, or are you OCD about minor details? I find that many people have unreasonable expectations.”
Continuing with this theme, more Cybertruck owners cast doubt on Michael’s story, saying that they haven’t had any problems with their trucks.
These were the happy customers; however, several other Cybertruck owners reported similar reliability problems as Michael.
Some even asked for the contact information for Michael’s lemon law lawyer to see if they could hire the same attorney and force Tesla to buy back their trucks.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, Kristie Lu, writes…
“Would you mind sharing the lawyer you are working with? Need assistance with my buyback.”
Another Cybertruck owner, Danny Tam, added:
“I’ve taken the Cybertruck in for service 12 times over the 9 months of ownership. I asked for a buyback but decided to trade it in for a new one. I just picked up the new Cybertruck a few days ago, and it feels much better. Body panels are mostly aligned. FSD doesn’t drive on the rumble strip.
A third Cybertruck owner, Alina Latinsky, writes…
“We got our Cybertruck on May 25 and are facing several issues. Initially, we reported a large gap at the front of the vehicle, but we were told nothing could be done. Later, the frunk had trouble opening and closing. Although they repaired that, the front gap increased. Now, we have to wait four months for an appointment at the collision shop to resolve it.”
Overall, looking at the comments, a lot of Cybertruck owners seem to be facing reliability concerns. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.
