Ksenija Mraković, a Tesla Model X owner from Canada, reports that his high-voltage battery recently failed while he was out on a fishing trip with his kids.
This situation is already concerning; however, Tesla is now refusing to replace his battery under warranty, claiming the vehicle had been driven in water.
Ksenija explains that Tesla’s primary argument that the Model X was submerged in water hinges on the vehicle’s location history, which shows it was parked in water on the day the battery failed.
However, Ksenija states this is a GPS error and insists that the vehicle was not parked in water all day, but rather was parked on a lot beside the lake.
Nevertheless, despite trying to explain the situation to a Tesla employee, the EV maker is insisting it will not replace the battery under warranty.
Tesla is now demanding that Ksenija pay $25,000 for a replacement battery pack.
The frustrated Model X owner shared his story on the Tesla Owners Canada Facebook group.
He writes…
“Hi guys, I need some advice. I took my car to the lake last weekend to spend time with the kids.
The car was parked in the lot all day while we were fishing and having fun.
At the end of the day, we were packing up, and I started driving when I noticed an old friend in the parking lot.
I stopped for about 15 minutes to talk with him, and after I got back to the car, a message appeared on the screen saying ‘Electrical system power reduced, vehicle shutting down.’
I had to call a towing company, and they took it to the local Tesla dealership.
Tesla didn’t perform any work on my vehicle for the entire week.
Finally, they called saying that the car needs a new high-voltage battery and that it is not covered under warranty.
They are assuming that the car was in water because, on the Tesla app location, it shows the vehicle parked near a boat launch on the lake.
I don’t understand how they can assume that. According to the service advisor, the car was close to water, which is why it’s not covered under warranty.
I tried to politely explain that we were fishing and it had nothing to do with water, but they didn’t do much.
Nobody contacted me again for two days, so I had to send a message through the app asking for an update.
They replied five minutes before work hours, saying the battery warranty wouldn’t apply and asking how I wanted to proceed.

They told me I’d have to pay $25,000 out of pocket.
What are your thoughts, and how can I contact the head office, or what’s your advice?”
This is definitely not ideal; however, looking at the comments, fellow Tesla owners had differing opinions on who’s to blame.
Some owners were outraged and recommended that Ksenija get a lawyer and take Tesla to court.
A fellow Tesla owner, Jay Withers, writes…
“I believe in this case, I would simply get a lawyer.”
A second Tesla owner, Igor Smith, writes…
“It seems you should hire a lawyer.”
However, other Tesla owners suggested that Ksenija is not telling the truth and Tesla wouldn’t claim the vehicle was submerged in water without solid evidence.
A fellow Tesla owner, Jason Auerback, writes…
“It’s quite obvious if a car was in a lake – it’s not something to be assumed.”
A second Tesla owner, Martin, expresses skepticism about Ksenija’s story writing…
“Yeah, there’s so much more to this story.”
A third Tesla owner, Matt Wadlin, adds…
“Just as an aside, it would be much easier to give you advice if you shared details about your vehicle, such as the model, year, and mileage. Did you buy it new or used? Are you absolutely sure that if you purchased it used, it has never had any water intrusion in its lifetime?”
Overall, looking at the comments, Tesla owners seem divided on who to trust. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.
