A Tesla Cybertruck Owner Says His Truck “Freaked Out” When He Drove It Over Grass Without Enabling Off-Road Mode – Adds “This is Like Having to Put On a Helmet to Walk the Dog”

Ed is a Cybertruck owner from Tennessee and says he was surprised by all the warnings he received after driving his Cybertruck over 1.5 inches of grass.
Ed mentions that he’s never taken his Cybertruck off-roading; however, given the truck’s specs, he believed driving over grass would be a walk in the park for the all-electric truck.
Ed was heading to a local festival, and the designated parking area was over a grassy field.
Again, Ed didn’t think this would pose any problem; however, he was taken aback when his truck started to beep and display warnings.
He mentions that the Cybertruck displayed an orange aura around the Cybertruck depiction on the center touchscreen, accompanied by the word ‘STOP’.
Ed adds that he was particularly concerned since he only recently got his Cybertruck back from Tesla service after a 19-day stay.
The worried Cybertruck owner shared his story on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.
He writes…

“I was going to the Franklin Main Street Festival, and parking was on grass.
When I cruised over the 1.5” grass, my Cybertruck freaked out and displayed an orange aura around the truck display. It warned “STOP” on the display (I found a similar warning online and have shared it below.
I was too worried to take a photo of my screen as I had JUST gotten my Cybertruck back from a 19-day service center life support visit.
I guess we have to enable off-road mode to drive on grass?!? Seems humorous! I mean, this is really the closest this baby has gotten to off-roading, but it’s really funny. Like putting on a helmet to walk the dog.”

Below his post, Ed included a few pictures. One shows a warning he found online that resembles what appeared on his Cybertruck’s center screen after he drove over the 1.5-inch grass.
The second picture Ed shared shows his Cybertruck parked in a grassy field.
Given the Cybertruck’s off-roading prowess, you wouldn’t expect the truck to freak out after simply driving over 1.5 inches of grass.
However, looking at the comments, other Cybertruck owners shared that they have experienced a similar warning after driving over grass.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, Yohst from California, writes…

“I do a lot of dirt/fire road driving and often need to go on shoulders and into the weeds (literally).
The truck bleeps “STOP” at me quite often, which is annoying.
I wish there were a quick way to override it for some duration. I hate taking my eyes off the road and onto the screen to “program” some road mode setting.”

Having to explicitly put the Cybertruck into Off-road mode every time you drive outside paved roads is not ideal.
However, fellow Cybertruck owners believe the warning when driving over grass is less likely out of fear of damaging the vehicle in the “off-road” driving environment; instead, it relates to the Tesla artificial intelligence software identifying that the Cybertruck is no longer on paved roads.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, John, writes…

“It’s more that the AI can’t detect the road; therefore, you are “off road”. You should still be able to drive…”

Another Cybertruck owner, Trevor, seconds this sentiment, writing…

“I live off-road… this has never happened to me.
I think your driving vision system is just freaking out because you’re crossing some perceived boundary.”

Even if this is likely the case, it’s interesting that a Tesla Cybertruck flashes a bunch of warnings when driving over short grass.
