Richard, a Cybertruck owner from Texas, says he was feeling confident about his truck’s self-driving capabilities after taking an almost perfect 200-mile road trip all driven by his Cybertruck.
However, after the road trip, Richard and his brother decided to grab a bite to eat. And, on their way back from the restaurant, the Cybertruck drove straight into oncoming traffic, where the speed limit was set at 70 miles per hour.
This is definitely scary; however, Richard thankfully notes that the vehicle coming straight at them was still far away, which gave him enough time to regain control and steer the Cybertruck back into the proper lane.
After this frightening experience, Richard says he no longer trusts his Cybertruck.
Richard notes that the nearly perfect 200-mile road trip had lulled him into a false sense of security.
However, he now cautions fellow Cybertruck owners to stay vigilant while using Tesla’s full self-driving software.
The frightened Cybertruck owner shared his story on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.
He writes…
“I went on a 200-mile round trip to the doctor’s office with my brother this morning. After getting home from an almost perfect ride, we decided to leave my house again to grab a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant.
On the way home, we reached a small county road intersection with a Farm to Market road (speed limit 70 mph), and the car turned left to head toward my house.
The problem is that when it turned left, it didn’t move into the right lane to get me home; instead, it turned into the oncoming traffic lane!
After building a high level of confidence in my Cybertruck, it brought me back down to earth with this strange error.
You still have to maintain a high level of vigilance when driving in supervised mode, no matter how far we’ve come.
Thankfully, the car coming toward us in the oncoming lane was a few hundred yards away, and I never felt we were in danger.
Of course, I intervened and sent a message indicating that the truck made a left turn into an oncoming traffic lane.
I can hardly wait for the updates that will take us to unsupervised full self-driving. It was another great day driving the truck, despite the significant disappointment.”
This is certainly not an ideal scenario, and looking at the comments, other Cybertruck owners have reported experiencing similar FSD behavior.
Specifically, during a left turn, instead of merging into the right lane, the vehicle drives into the left lane, heading directly into oncoming traffic.
A fellow Cybertruck owner in Austin, Texas, also mentioned that he experiences similar problems.
He writes…
“The left turn into the wrong lane happens with me as well, even without intersections. Basically, any 90-degree left turn with no oncoming traffic.”
This sounds bad, but the Cybertruck owner says he’s not too concerned and he’s hoping an over-the-air update will fix this issue.
He continues to write…
“I take it as a quirk, and am waiting for the FSD update that will one day fix this.”
Again, this is troubling, and looking through online forums, I’ve seen several Cybertruck owners reporting that their truck has driven into oncoming traffic.
What’s even more surprising is that in less than two weeks, Tesla plans to launch the first unsupervised fully self-driving robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas.
Regrettably, both gentlemen who reported their vehicle driving into oncoming traffic are from Texas, with one specifically hailing from Austin, Texas.
As the launch of Tesla’s robotaxi network approaches, it’s worrisome that the vehicle continues to make significant errors, including driving directly into oncoming traffic.
