Don Furr, a Cybertruck owner from Tennessee, says he was recently driving on the highway when he unexpectedly got into an accident.
Don explains he was manually driving on the interstate when he decided to activate Tesla’s full self-driving (FSD) software.
Believing that FSD was now in control, Don says he took his hands off the steering wheel and looked away for a moment.
At that point, regrettably, although Don pressed the scroll wheel, FSD had not properly engaged.
As a result, with Don not monitoring his vehicle, his Cybertruck veered off the road into the gravel.
This is definitely concerning, and after his accident, Don has a suggestion for Tesla that he believes will eliminate uncertainty about whether FSD is active.
Don shared his story on the Cybertruck Owners Only group on Facebook.
He wrote…
“I hope Tesla monitors this forum.
I hit the scroll wheel on the steering wheel, which activates FSD, and I assumed I was in FSD mode. I looked away for a second, only to see my Cybertruck veer off the interstate and into the gravel.”
Don takes responsibility for what happened and admits he is to blame. However, he suggests that Tesla add a voice confirmation feature, which would audibly announce “FSD is engaged,’ to help prevent others from ending up in his situation.
Don writes…
“It was my fault, I know, but wouldn’t it be nice if when you engaged FSD, it would audibly say ‘FSD engaged’?
I think sometimes we get a little too complacent with all the bells and whistles on this thing. But I certainly do love this truck!”
This seems like a good consideration to improve Tesla vehicle safety; however, comments from other Cybertruck owners show some pushback.
The main argument against Don’s idea is that Tesla already provides a notification when FSD is engaged, in the form of a chime.

A Cybertruck owner commented…
“It makes an audible tone. User error.”
Another Cybertruck owner, Nicholas Dutko, wrote…
“There’s a ding when FSD is engaged. Also, there should be a green dot next to the steering wheel on your screen.
We don’t need double fail-safes because of stupidity.”
A third Cybertruck owner, Tishawn Fahie, added…
“Not only does the vehicle make a distinct sound to let you know you’ve engaged FSD, but it also shows a rainbow.
I’m trying to figure out what else Tesla needs to do to inform you about your vehicle’s status. Shaking my head…”
Many Cybertruck owners agree that the chime when FSD is activated is enough; however, Don and a few others remain unconvinced.
Don said…
“You don’t understand. The issue is I thought I set FSD, but I didn’t, and I assumed I did.”
Another owner, Cammie Thomas Patch, shared her experience, saying she has also been in a situation where she thought FSD was engaged, only realizing it wasn’t after the vehicle jumped across four lanes on the highway.
Cammie wrote…
“Sometimes I miss the audible notification too. One time, I changed lanes completely across a four-lane freeway and thought it was a weird FSD flex, then realized no one was flying the plane.”
