A family is facing life-altering circumstances after the father was run over by a Tesla Cybertruck at the recent Burning Man festival.
The father, JP, is now at the hospital facing months of recovery, medical bills, and lost wages.
His wife Jade shared the story on Facebook.
She writes…
“We suffered a terrible, life-altering accident at Burning Man this year.
On Saturday, the night of the man burn, JP stepped away from the chaos to do something simple and grounding: meditate on the playa just outside our camp.
JP was sober, had a light around his neck, and sat down to soak up the final glow of sunset.
In that quiet, vulnerable moment, a Cybertruck art car — nearly silent against the roar of the night — ran him over.
Pinned beneath the vehicle, JP had to scream for help before the car reversed and released him. He was airlifted to Reno, where doctors performed reconstructive surgery on both of his broken feet.
JP’s road to recovery will be long. He is currently still in the trauma center at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada. He will not be able to walk for several months.
As self-employed working artists, our financial safety net was thin to begin with, and our livelihood is now in jeopardy. Beyond the enormous medical costs, JP’s absence means lost wages, lost childcare support at home, and an urgent need for extra help to keep our household afloat during this crisis.
Our friends have put together a GoFundMe to help us get through this difficult time. Every “share” helps, and donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.”
Below her post, Jade included two pictures. The first picture shows JP, Jade, and their two children at the Burning Man festival, wearing bright clothes, happy, and all riding bikes in the Nevada desert.
The second picture, sadly, shows JP in the hospital, lying in a bed with an oxygen mask on his face, fighting to recover after being pinched down by a Cybertruck.
As Jade mentions, family friends have organized a GoFundMe page for JP and his family. So far, the fundraiser has reached 53% of its goal, with $32,000 raised of the $60,000 target.
The entire accident is truly sad. As Jade mentions, because of the Cybertruck’s electric motor and the vehicle’s quietness, JP was unable to hear the truck.
Additionally, the Cybertruck’s large size, both in height and weight, has contributed to the cause and severity of the accident.
As Jade points out, JP was sitting on the desert floor when the accident occurred. The Cybertruck’s height may have prevented the driver from seeing him, and the truck’s weight, after JP was pinned beneath it, definitely worsened the damage.
Jade’s post did not detail how the Cybertruck’s stainless steel exterior contributed to the damage, but the truck’s sharp and thick stainless steel corners likely did not play a positive role.

Overall, although the Cybertruck is not the only electric vehicle on the road, the truck’s quietness, size in both height and weight, and its sharp edges and cold-rolled stainless exterior could have combined to make an already less-than-ideal situation worse.
Additionally, during the recent Burning Man festival, we have seen several Cybertruck owners share that they’re bringing their all-electric trucks to the event.
The widespread presence of Cybertrucks at the Burning Man festival has also increased the likelihood of the truck being involved in an accident.
This is certainly not ideal; however, looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners defended the all-electric truck and expressed their wish that Jade had left out the Cybertruck part from her description of the accident.
Jade’s Facebook post was reposted on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum, where fellow Cybertruck owners shared their opinions regarding the accident.
A forum member who goes by the username Cybertruck Wraps first shared the story.
Cybertruck wraps writes…
“Bad press from Burning Man!
Why did they need to say Cybertruck? Clearly, it was heavily modified, and the guy was meditating in the path. The news will be all over this!”
This is an interesting perspective; however, looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners said the blame is on JP and not the Cybertruck or the driver.
A fellow Cybertruck owner from Cleveland writes…
“So he was lying in the street in the dark, being a weirdo, but the driver is to blame?”
Another Cybertruck owner, Travis from Texas, writes…
“The TRUCK, not the person driving it, ran him over.
It’s so annoying to see this. It’s like the whole “gun violence” thing, where it is the person that is responsible, not the device.”
Overall, looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners shared their view that the truck shouldn’t be blamed in the situation.
