Joe, a Cybertruck owner from New Jersey, says Tesla had to install a third off-road lightbar on his truck after the first two failed.
According to Joe, Tesla engineers are puzzled as to why the same part keeps failing and have sent the faulty components to headquarters for further analysis.
Joe explains that after a year of waiting, he was thrilled when Tesla finally reached out and told him he could have the off-road lightbar installed.
However, just a week after he got his lightbar, Joe noticed it was starting to come off the top of the windshield.
As a result, Joe immediately booked an appointment with Tesla service to resolve the issue. However, Tesla Service informed him that the earliest available appointment was in a month.
Regrettably, while waiting for his service date, the off-road lightbar flew off the back of his truck in the middle of the highway.
At this point, Joe went to another Tesla service center, where they apologized and installed a new lightbar on his truck.
So far, Joe wasn’t too frustrated, but a week after the second installation, the new lightbar also started to come loose.
Learning from his previous experience, Joe duct-taped the lightbar to keep it in place until his next service appointment.
Tesla then installed a third off-road lightbar on his truck and told him that Tesla engineers are curious about why the same component keeps failing and have sent the failed unit to headquarters for further analysis.
This is definitely not ideal, and the frustrated Cybertruck owner shared his story on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.
He wrote:
“Cybertruck LightBar Saga: Third Time’s the Charm!
Just wanted to share my experience with the 2024 Foundation Series Cybertruck Lightbar—because wow, what a ride.
Part 1 – The Excitement (and the Launch)
I finally received an email from Tesla saying my Lightbar was ready for installation. I made the appointment, waited a month, and got it installed.
Within a week, it started loosening up. I contacted Tesla, booked another appointment (another month-long wait), and then—BOOM! The LightBar flew off. Yes, flew. Check out the video and photos I posted.
Part 2 – Redemption at the New Service Center.
I brought it into a brand-new service center, and the team there was fantastic. They apologized, installed a new Lightbar, and are reimbursing me for the rewrap. They also replaced my cantrails and gave me $300 to rewrap both sides.
But guess what? One week later, the Lightbar started loosening again.
Part 3 – Duct Tape and Determination

I duct-taped the Lightbar down and headed back to service ASAP. They installed a third Lightbar, and the tech mentioned that Tesla engineers were very interested in my case—they even sent the failed unit to them.
Several weeks have passed, and the new Lightbar is holding strong. I love the look, and it integrates beautifully with the Assault Lightshow.
Good luck! Hope this sheds some “light” for some of you still waiting for your lightbar!”
Below his post, Joe shared a video and several pictures of his Cybertruck.
The first video, recorded by the truck’s sentry camera, shows the Cybertruck driving on the highway when suddenly the off-road lightbar flies off the top.
Thankfully, there was no vehicle behind Joe, but the lightbar could have struck them at highway speeds.
Following the incident, Joe also took several pictures of his truck. The first picture shows the top corner of the windshield where the lightbar fell off.
As you can see, there’s now black glue residue where the lightbar used to be.
The second picture, on the other hand, shows the ripped-out wire harness that powered the lightbar from the vehicle. This was torn out when the lightbar flew off on the highway.
This is definitely not ideal; however, looking at the fellow Cybertruck owners say that they have faced similar issues.
A fellow Cybertruck owner, Steve from Washington, writes:
“I had a similar experience, but skipped step 2. My service center in Lynnwood, Washington, is excellent. After the initial installation, I noticed it was a little loose and sent them a video.
They called me the next morning and told me to bring it in right away because they wanted to replace it before it fell off and damaged the wrap.
I showed up the next morning (with donuts for everyone), and they had a new one installed in a couple of hours, which has been rock solid.”
A second Cybertruck owner, Chris from New Jersey, says:
“My first install started getting loose, so I pulled it off completely. I told the Service Center, and they said they’ve made changes to the adhesive, so I shouldn’t have a problem anymore.
I brought it back for another install and to fix the cant rail that they messed up, and now it seems solid. It’s been about 2 weeks.”
A lot of Cybertruck owners seem to be experiencing issues with the off-road lightbar. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.
