Overview Polestar has reached the fifth entry in its numerically labeled lineup, and the ambitious new 5 flagship arrives on the scene as a high-horsepower EV grand tourer. The low-slung sedan has the performance to back up its racy appearance, with a base Dual Motor trim brandishing 748 horsepower and a Performance model that ups output to 884 horsepower. Range is impressive too, with Polestar estimating 416 miles of electric driving for the Dual Motor and 351 miles for the Performance. The 5 uses recycled materials in its cabin, but nothing looks like it belongs in a bin in the alley. The interior design is minimalist and stylish, in the typical Scandinavian fashion. Like the Polestar 4, the 5 trades a rear window for a digital rearview mirror; this is meant to improve headroom for second-row passengers. With a hefty price tag and immense power, the 5 is clearly gunning for luxury four-door EV rivals such as the Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air, but whether it has the cachet and performance to truly take the fight to those models remains to be seen. What’s New for 2026?The 5 is entirely new for 2026, joining the 2, 3, and 4 as the new flagship model in Polestar’s lineup. While the Polestar 5 is currently available to order in other parts of the world, we don’t expect to see the 5 on U.S. shores until late 2025 or early 2026. While the 884-hp Performance model will undoubtedly be a rocketship, the standard Dual Motor trim still wields 748 horsepower and is estimated to deliver more range. Polestar hasn’t released pricing figures for the 5 yet, but we’d bet that the Dual Motor will be substantially less expensive than the Performance model, too. EV Motor, Power, and Performance
- EV Motors: 748-hp dual motor (Dual Motor), 884-hp dual motor (Performance)
- Drivetrain: all-wheel drive
All Polestar 5s will feature a dual-motor electric powertrain with all-wheel drive. In base Dual Motor form, the 5 features one electric motor on the front axle and one on the rear for a total combined output of 748 horsepower. The Performance version ups the ante with a more powerful rear motor, bringing its combined output to 884 horsepower. In both trims, the rear electric motor can disconnect from the front motor to reduce drag, making the 5 a front-driver on occasions when additional power isn’t necessary. The 5 is built on Polestar’s new Performance Architecture, which uses an aluminum platform. The Performance model makes use of MagneRide adaptive dampers for improved body control without sacrificing comfort. To keep the 5’s prodigious power in check, both models are fitted with a beefy brake setup comprised of two-piece brake rotors at all four corners and four-piston Brembo calipers in front. On our recent test drive of a 5 Performance prototype, we were impressed with its communicative steering and tight body control. At speed, the prototype felt comfortable and composed, and its prodigious acceleration felt quicker than Polestar’s 3.1-second 60 mph-estimate suggests. 0–60-MPH Times
- Claimed 60-mph Time: 3.8 seconds (Dual Motor), 3.1 seconds (Performance)
In Comparison: While Polestar estimates the 5 Performance can reach 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, we wouldn’t be surprised if its actual sprint time fell somewhere in the two-second window based on our time in the prototype.
Additional ResearchRange, Charging, and Battery Life
- Claimed EV Range: 351-416 miles
Polestar rates the base 5 Dual Motor for an impressive 416 miles of electric driving range. With its more powerful rear electric motor, the 5 Performance can manage 351 miles of driving, according to Polestar. If those figures are accurate, the base 5 will be competitive with the Lucid Air Pure and surpass the Tesla Model S from a range standpoint. If you’re able to find a 350 kW DC fast charger, Polestar claims that the 5 can charge its 112-kWh battery pack from 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes. We haven’t tested the 5’s range or charge speeds yet, but we’ll update this section when we have real-world testing numbers. Interior, Comfort, and CargoFirst Row: The Polestar 5’s interior is both elegant and spacious. As is typical of the Swedish brand, the 5’s forward cabin is minimalist in signature Scandinavian fashion. The front seats, designed in collaboration with Recaro, are upholstered in a faux leather made from recycled materials and are both comfortable and premium-feeling. Other decorative trim in the forward cabin is made from recycled materials, although you’d never know from its sophisticated design. Second Row: Despite the 5’s sloping roofline, headroom in the second row is generous. A tinted glass roof gives the rear cabin an airy feel, and an indent in the underfloor battery behind the front seats affords rear-seat passengers a deeper footwell. Cargo Capacity: Like many other EVs, the Polestar 5 has two trunks, one in the front and one in the rear. Neither of them is very spacious, with the rear trunk only offering 13 cubic feet of cargo space and the frunk offering 2 cubic feet. Infotainment and Connectivity
- Infotainment: 14.5-inch touchscreen
- Audio System: 10-speaker Polestar audio system (standard), 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system
The Polestar 5’s infotainment needs are handled by a vertically mounted 14.5-inch touchscreen display mounted centrally on the dash between the driver and passenger. The large display runs a Polestar-specific version of Android Automotive OS that has been adapted from the software used by the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4. Warranty and Maintenance CoveragePolestar’s limited warranty sticks to the industry standard, on par with that of Tesla. The company also provides competitive coverage for the 5’s electrical components.
- Limited Warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain Warranty: eight years or 100,000 miles
- Complimentary Maintenance: three years or 30,000 miles
