2025 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2025 Chevy Suburban: How They Compare

03/05/2025

Chevy updated its Tahoe and Suburban full-size SUVs with fresh styling and improved infotainment equipment for 2025. They continue to occupy the same places at the large end of the brand’s SUV lineup—the Tahoe is a big three-row and the Suburban is its even longer sibling. Much is shared between these two models, including powertrains and features, while the Suburban’s extra third-row room and expanded cargo space make it the more expensive option. To help anyone trying to decide between these big guys, we’ve gathered the most important power, fuel-economy, interior space, towing, and price specs to clarify what’s the same and where they differ.
PowertrainsAs mentioned, the Tahoe and Suburban offer the same menu of engine options. A 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 is standard, while a 420-hp 6.2-liter and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel are available. For 2025, the diesel sees some improvements, including an output boost of 28 horsepower and 35 pound-feet of torque, for respective totals of 305 and 495. Four-wheel drive is either available or standard, depending on the trim and powertrain. Regardless of engine choice, all versions of the Tahoe and ‘Burban come equipped with the same 10-speed automatic transmission. Fuel EconomyDespite their differences in length and weight, the 2025 Tahoe and Suburban have matching EPA fuel-economy ratings. With rear-wheel drive and the diesel—a combo offered only on the Suburban—mileage ratings peak at 21 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway, while four-wheel-drive versions of both models manage 20 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway with that engine. Opting for a gas motor nets highs of 15/20 mpg city/highway for a rear-driver with the 5.3-liter engine and bottoms out at 14/18 mpg city/highway for the 6.2-liter engine and four-wheel drive. In our testing, a 2021 Tahoe diesel achieved a real-world 75-mpg highway fuel-economy result of 27 mpg.VIEW PHOTOSChevrolet2025 Chevrolet Suburban High Country. The larger Suburban has a bigger fuel tank: 28 gallons versus 24 for the Tahoe. That gives the Tahoe a maximum EPA-estimated range of 528 miles with the diesel and four-wheel drive, while a Suburban with the same engine and drivetrain is pegged at 616 miles. The rear-wheel-drive diesel Suburban does even better, with a projected range of 644 miles.Interior and CargoBoth full-size Chevy SUVs include a standard third row and are available with seven-, eight-, and nine-seat configurations (a three-person front bench is available on the base LS trim). They’re nothing short of cavernous inside, but the Suburban’s extra 15 inches of length translate to additional third-row and cargo space. The Suburban’s rearmost seat offers an additional 1.8 inches of legroom, which tall adults will appreciate, while the Tahoe’s 34.9-inch total is more than most three-row utilities offer. Head- and legroom are identical and generous in the first two rows. Lift the hatch, however, and the Suburban has a clear advantage over its less-large sibling. Max cargo room in the Tahoe is 122.7 cubic feet, with 72.5 cubes behind the second row and 25.5 aft of the third. The Suburban’s totals are 144.5 cubic feet with all seats down, 93.8 with the second row up, and 41.5 with all three rows in place. These two offer a wide range of available comfort and convenience features, including heated and ventilated front seats, heat for the outboard second-row positions, a power-folding third row, and a rear-camera mirror. A giant, 17.7-inch center touchscreen comes standard and includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, and all models get an 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster. Also standard is a surround-view camera, which makes parking and other tight, low-speed maneuvers with these vehicles less of a chore.TowingAside from taking up a bit less space, the Tahoe does have a clear if marginal advantage over the Suburban in towing. The shorter of these two can pull a trailer weighing up to 8400 pounds, whereas the Suburban tops out at 8200. The Tahoe can also handle marginally heavier cargo inside, with a max payload capacity of 1834 pounds compared to the Suburban’s 1750.PriceNeither model comes cheap, with Tahoe pricing starting at $61,195 and the Suburban asking a minimum of $64,195. That $3000 difference is consistent across the lineup, which includes LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country trims for both models. Spec a Suburban with all of the options, and you’re looking at an MSRP approaching $100K. That may seem like a lot for a Chevy that doesn’t say Corvette on it, but it is at least less expensive than a maxed-out GMC Yukon or Cadillac Escalade, both of which share underpinnings and many features with the Tahoe and Suburban. More ComparisonsEver since David was a wee Car and Driver intern, he has kept a spreadsheet listing all the vehicles he’s driven and tested. David really likes spreadsheets. He can parallel-park a school bus and once drove a Lincoln Town Car 63 mph in reverse. After taking a break from journalism to work on autonomous vehicles, he’s back writing for this and other automotive publications. When David’s not searching for the perfect used car, you can find him sampling the latest in gimmicky, limited-edition foodstuffs.
