SUVs continue to dominate the U.S. car market, and it’s not hard to see why. They offer a higher driving position, optional all-wheel drive, roomy interiors, and family-friendly versatility. With hybrids and plug-in hybrids now delivering fuel economy close to—or even better than—sedans, the SUV segment has become even more appealing.

As such, here is a summarized update of a recent Consumer Reports “Best of…” alerting consumers to the 10 best SUVs you can buy right now, whether you’re looking for a compact crossover, a plug-in hybrid, or a three-row family hauler. These SUVs represent the best buys available right now.

Related article: Popular Small SUVs to Avoid and What to Buy Instead

1. Subaru Forester (2025)

Price Range: $29,995 – $43,295

Fuel Economy: 29 mpg overall

The new Forester remains one of the most practical SUVs you can buy. It’s spacious, comfortable, and comes standard with all-wheel drive. Visibility is excellent thanks to large windows and slim roof pillars, making it a breeze to drive in traffic or tight spaces. Its fuel efficiency is remarkable for a non-hybrid compact SUV, hitting 29 mpg. However, some key safety features like blind spot monitoring are not standard on the base trim.

2. Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid (Prime) (2025)

Price Range: $44,565 – $48,435

Fuel Economy: 34 mpg overall / 40 miles EV range

The RAV4 Prime blends speed, comfort, and efficiency. With 302 horsepower, it’s surprisingly quick while remaining quiet and refined. Drivers can cover about 40 miles on electric power before the gas engine kicks in, and charging on a 240-volt outlet takes under five hours. Inside, the cabin feels upscale compared with the standard RAV4, and the ride quality is noticeably smoother.

3. Toyota Crown Signia (2025)

Price Range: $44,090 – $48,490

Fuel Economy: 37 mpg overall

The Crown Signia is best described as a stylish hybrid wagon disguised as an SUV. It delivers an impressive 530-mile range, excellent fuel economy, and standard all-wheel drive. The cabin features supportive seats and ample space in the back. While the infotainment system is relatively easy to use, the digital instrument display can feel overly complicated.

4. Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid (2025)

Price Range: $39,730 – $47,440

Fuel Economy: 31 mpg overall / 33 miles EV range

The Tucson PHEV offers the best of both worlds: short electric-only trips and efficient hybrid driving when the battery runs out. It’s easy to stay in EV mode around town, and charging is quick with a Level 2 outlet. Beyond efficiency, it’s also a well-rounded SUV with a comfortable ride, responsive handling, and a roomy interior.

5. Honda CR-V Hybrid (2025)

Price Range: $34,650 – $41,100

Fuel Economy: 35 mpg overall

The CR-V Hybrid has long been a go-to choice for families. It’s spacious, easy to get in and out of, and returns excellent fuel economy. Honda’s hybrid system even mimics traditional gear shifts for a more natural driving feel. Cargo space is generous, visibility is good, and all of the expected safety features come standard.

6. Subaru Outback (2025)

Price Range: $29,995 – $44,730

Fuel Economy: 24 mpg overall

Part SUV, part wagon, the Outback is a versatile option for drivers who want something capable but not too bulky. The optional turbo engine makes highway merging and mountain driving easy, while the standard all-wheel drive and comfortable ride make it road-trip ready. Inside, it’s practical with nice touches like built-in roof racks and a two-position cargo cover.

7. Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (2025)

Price Range: $33,465 – $41,295

Fuel Economy: 35 mpg overall

The Tucson Hybrid is a strong contender in the compact SUV category. It’s efficient, responsive, and quieter than the gas-only version. Inside, owners will find plenty of space for passengers and cargo. The 2025 model year brings updated technology, including a bigger touchscreen and wireless smartphone integration. Note: the higher trims replace simple knobs with touch-sensitive controls and a push-button gear selector.

8. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (2025)

Price Range: $28,850 – $40,205

Fuel Economy: 37 mpg overall

RAV4 practicality with great fuel savings is this hybrid model’s sweet spot. It’s quick, handles well, and sips fuel at 37 mpg overall. The downside is a slightly stiff ride and a somewhat noisy engine under load. Still, the updated infotainment system and standard safety features on most trims make it a solid all-around choice.

9. Toyota Highlander Hybrid (2025)

Price Range: $39,520 – $53,675

Fuel Economy: 35 mpg overall

For families needing three rows, the Highlander Hybrid offers a mix of efficiency and practicality. With 243 horsepower, it has enough muscle for daily driving while delivering 35 mpg overall. The second row is roomy, but the third row is best reserved for kids. Ride quality is smooth, and higher trims have a premium rather than “plasticky” feel inside.

10. Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid (2025)

Price Range: $37,800 – $49,650

Fuel Economy: 34 mpg overall

Redesigned for 2024, the Santa Fe Hybrid sports bold styling and a boxy shape that creates a spacious interior. It also adds a small but handy third-row seat. The hybrid version is smooth, efficient, and free of the problems that sometimes plague the standard gas engine. Cargo space is generous, and user-friendly controls make everyday driving less stressful.
